" FEEDBACK. Don't produce art or art history by making a 'new' move in the game of aesthetics you learn in school. Assess the image ecology you live in and respond to it. Learn the system and respond to it. Learn the system and counter it -- make noise."
- David Joselit, Feedback: Television Against Democracy
FEEDBACK UNDERGROUND is an artistic research collective investigating the production and effects of the London Underground’s systems of control. We understand the Underground as a pressurised intersection of economic, political and social structures affecting millions of Londoners who try daily to negotiate its space. As users of this system, we have identified the technological environment, visual language and surveillance culture of the Tube as key mechanisms of control--within which we situate our research. Recognising the impossibility of understanding a space through writing alone, we employ playful, interactive interventions as a means of investigating the space, proposing alternative ways of living it. These artistic interventions aim to produce feedback loops, in which we enact a reciprocal dialogue with the regulating systems. In performing unintended ways of using these networks, we are encouraging the system to reveal itself. Will the system allow us to alter our experience of it, and what happens if it does?
